Dan Savage, founder of the
It Gets Better Project, will be honored with a Special Achievement Award later today during the
Webby Awards for his work inspiring LGBT youth to overcome bullying.
Each year the
International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences honors excellence on the internet during the
Webby Awards. Established in 1996, the Webbys have recognized over 100 websites, interactive advertising campaigns, online film and video and mobile applications. The
It Gets Better Project has been using a combination of these online tools to send a powerful message of support to LGBT youth.
It Gets Better started following the media coverage of the suicide deaths of LGBT (or LGBT-perceived) teenagers last fall. Dan Savage and his partner Tyler Miller recorded a
video and posted it on
Youtube to send a message of hope to LGBT youth and encourage them to turn their attention towards a brighter future. Dan Savage created an official
It Gets Better channel on Youtube and soon millions of users posted their own message of encouragement. Among those who sent messages to LGBT youth are: President
Barack Obama, Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton,
Chris Colfer of Glee, comedienne
Kathy Griffin,
Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet from Modern Family, Fort Worth City Councilman
Joel Burns, the
Yale Divinity School, and
Google employees.
