Wonder what we’re up to at GLAAD?

GLAAD celebrated its 25th anniversary on March 19th at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York, where thousands gathered to recognize and honor the media's most outstanding images of the LGBT community. This year we saw some of the most impressive and diverse honorees yet, including international pop sensation Ricky Martin, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, 30 Rock writer and actress Tina Fey, and True Blood actor Denis O’Hare. Together, these notables all sent an important message to Americans of acceptance and support for the LGBT community.

Also in attendance at the New York Media Awards this year were 300 young people who were able to attend thanks to GLAAD's Young Adults Program. An especially notable young person at the ceremony was Nikki Peet, a 17-year old high school student from Corpus Christi, TX who gained national attention after successfully petitioning her school district to create a Gay-Straight Alliance. Nikki joined host Andy Cohen on stage and received a standing ovation for her work.
GLAAD also recently formed new partnerships with two groups, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).
GLAAD reached out to WWE in response to complaints it had received about several instances of anti-gay taunting on "WWE Raw." In order to send a more inclusive message to its young audience, WWE is working with GLAAD to spread anti-bullying messages and to hold seminars for its writing staff. Included in GLAAD’s training will be WWE announcer Michael Cole, who recently apologized after using an anti-gay slur on Twitter.
On March 18th, the AFT launched its national anti-bullying campaign, “See a Bully, Stop a Bully: Make a Difference” in order to raise awareness about bullying and to provide resources to educators, parents, and others. The AFT will be distributing blue wristbands in schools nationwide, demonstrating solidarity against bullying. As part o
f its partnership with the AFT, GLAAD distributed the wristbands in gift bags at the GLAAD Media Awards in New York.

Last week GLAAD also took time to remember Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who was a longtime advocate of HIV/AIDS research and a powerful ally to the LGBT community. In 1985, Taylor co-founded the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR), of which she was an active board member until her death. In 2000, GLAAD presented Taylor with the Vanguard Award at the 11th Annual GLAAD Media Awards for raising visibility for those affected by HIV/AIDS. It premiered at E! Online, sending a powerful message in support of LGBT equality to millions of readers. Video of her acceptance speech can be seen here.
