GLAAD’s Senior Director of Media Programs, Rashad Robinson, has been named one of the top 100 emerging and established African American leaders by The Root. The Root’s list, The Root 100, profiles influential leaders making “extraordinary contributions,” honoring leadership, creativity, service and excellence.
Robinson has risen to become a respected advocate for LGBT equality. Prior to his tenure at GLAAD, Robinson served as Communications Director of The Right to Vote Campaign, a national collaborative of seven major civil rights organizations including the NAACP, ACLU, and People for the American Way. Before he began working at Right to Vote, Rashad served as National Field Director at FairVote.
In his time at GLAAD, Robinson spearheaded the development of GLAAD’s Media Field Strategy division, which has helped build a communications infrastructure within movement organizations and provided strategic media support, trainings, and message development in states across the country, supporting successful initiatives to change public opinion and policy. He has also led the development of GLAAD’s Faith and Values Program, which is raising the visibility of LGBT people of faith and counteracting anti-gay activism and cultural inertia that position people of faith and the LGBT community as mutually exclusive and opposing forces. In addition, he has led partnerships with coalitions of organizations and researchers to develop tools for advocates working to communicate with and persuade African American and Latino/a audiences on a range of LGBT rights issues. Robinson is also a recognized on-air figure representing GLAAD, appearing on programming ranging from Access Hollywood to The O'Reilly Factor and for outlets such as ABC, BET, CNN, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal among others.
Joining Robinson in The Root 100’s LGBT presence is Aisha C. Moodie-Mills, President of Campaign for All DC Families and a leader in the movement to legalize marriage for gay and lesbian couples in D.C., and New York-based visual artist Kehinde Wiley.
