Republican leaders ask potential GOP presidential candidates to avoid anti-gay attacks | February 4, 2015

While speaking on a panel called "Marriage Equality and the Republican Party" last night, three Republican leaders signed a resolution urging Republican presidential candidates to avoid anti-gay attacks during the 2016 election. Political columnist and television host Meghan McCain, Log Cabin Republican Executive Director, Gregory T. Angelo and the first openly gay candidate to run for President, Fred Karger signed the "St. Louis Resolution" in front of an audience at Graham Chapel at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

Representation in the halls of government is just as important as representation in corporate board rooms or in TV, film, video games, or music. That’s why GLAAD is working hard to make sure LGBTQ people and our allies register and turn out to vote in 2022 and have the tools they need to make informed decisions when they go to the polls.

LGBTQ people turned out to vote in record numbers in 2020, and we can do it again. According to GLAAD’s 2020 Post-Election Poll, 93% of registered LGBTQ voters turned out with 25% being first time voters. GLAAD has teamed up with Headcount - a national organization that aims to increase voter registration and promote participation in democracy - to maintain and expand the gains we achieved in 2020.

It can be confusing to register and vote without a home address. 40% of youth experiencing homelessness are LGBTQ, and 1 in 5 transgender people will experience homelessness at some point during their lives. Know that even if you are experiencing homelessness, you still have voting rights.

LGBTQ people are three times as likely to be incarcerated as the general population. Additionally, 300,000 gay and transgender youth are arrested and/or detained each year, of which more than 60% are black or Latino. Whether or not you have been incarcerated, your vote can advocate for those who have been.
