Day 4 & 5: South Carolina -- GLAAD's #SouthernStories Summer Tour

EDITOR'S NOTE: GLAAD visited and filmed the video included below in Charleston, SC, in the days before the heartbreaking tragedy at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.  Our deepest condolences are with the families and friends of the victims. GLAAD stands in solidarity with Civil Rights organizations and local activists working to end violence against people of color.

As a part of GLAAD's video series, GLAAD: All Access, host Claire Pires documented every day of GLAAD's Southern Stories Summer Tour! Starting on June 12 in Nashville, GLAAD kicked off the tour with the inaugural Concert for Love & Acceptance presented by Ty Herndon and GLAAD. GLAAD travelled by bus to six states in eight days to meet local LGBT advocates and allies to bring attention to their stories.

After travelling to Tenessee, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida, GLAAD stopped on Monday June 15 in Charleston, South Carolina to screen "GLAAD Presents: State of Change – South Carolina," a short documentary profiling the experiences of LGBT advocates and their allies in South Carolina. This documentary is the first in a series of six films that will share the experiences of, and accelerate acceptance for, LGBT people and communities across the U.S. South. "GLAAD Presents: State of Change -- South Carolina" was released by The Huffington Post last week.

The short films were produced and directed by Claire Pires as part of GLAAD's Southern Stories program, which is dedicated to accelerating acceptance in America's southern states.

GLAAD screened the film in Charleston, South Carolina at the historic William Aiken House followed by a panel with people who were featured in the film and local LGBT advocates. On Tuesday June 16, GLAAD screened the documentary at the Nickelodeon Theater in downtown Columbia to a sold-out crowd followed by a panel. In these two videos, you get a behind-the-scenes look at the screenings, the discussions afterward, and the audience's reactions.

GLAAD's Southern Stories Summer Tour was produced with support from Major Partner, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams, and Official Partner, Honey Maid.
