New York State updates birth certificate policy, but obstacles remain for those born in NYC

The Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF), in conjunction with a coalition that includes the Sylvia Rivera Law Project and Empire State Pride Agenda among others, has announced that the State of New York now requires only an affidavit from a licensed healthcare provider that indicates a transgender individual has received clinical treatment in order to correct birth certificates. The City of New York has yet to follow suit.

New York Health Commissioner Nirav Shah recently called the state a "leader in promoting transgender issues," yet states like California, as well as the District of Columbia, have surpassed New York in providing trans and gender non-conforming people with access to necessary healthcare.

Tuesday was Empire State Pride Agenda's Equality and Justice Day. Advocates pushed for the passage of the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act and the Child-Parent Security Act.
