Spirit Day Ambassador Brittany McMillan came up with the idea for Spirit Day as a way to show support for LGBT young people who might be targeted by bullies, and to remember those victims of bullying whose lives were lost to suicide. GLAAD has been the driving force behind Spirit Day’s success in the media since its inception two years ago. GLAAD has inspired the media to share Spirit Day’s message far and wide, with millions upon millions of people throughout North America. GLSEN works every day to educate and empower schools and school officials to support LGBT students. GLSEN encourages students and educators to strive to create safe spaces and healthy learning environments for LGBT young people. The Trevor Project does critical work with troubled young people, many of whom have been told by bullies that there is no place for them in this world. The Trevor Project tells them the truth, which is that they are loved and cared for. All three of these organizations embody the soul of Spirit Day.
