JOB SUMMARY

The Vice President of Communications will be a highly experienced, self-driven and entrepreneurial communications leader and will serve as a key strategic thought and operational partner to the Chief Communications Officer in advancing GLAAD’s brand communications/PR activities, advocacy campaigns, and programs.  This position will both support and direct GLAAD's external communications to grow visibility of GLAAD and LGBTQ people and issues with a wide variety of audiences, including mainstream news and entertainment media outlets, and the public at large. Working in close partnership with the Chief Communications Officer, the Vice President will be the number two leader overseeing the Corporate Communications, Social Media, and Creative departments and will spearhead GLAAD's extensive media relations efforts, including cultivating a wide network of top-level media contacts and influencers. This position will also develop and implement content and strategic public engagement initiatives that lead to large-scale impact for the LGBTQ community. The person occupying this role must have a keen sense for risk assessment as well as the ability to develop and articulate crisis strategies at a moment's notice. GLAAD’s PR and communications go beyond brand awareness for the organization and often shape LGBTQ issues and educate the general public about LGBTQ issues or breaking news so knowledge and passion for LGBTQ people and issues is critical. This position will also collaborate with other departments including GLAAD’s News and Rapid Response team in developing communications plans and broader strategies to advance department goals, including the GLAAD Media Awards production team.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & Responsibilities

Strategy, Vision & Leadership

  • Work alongside GLAAD's Chief Communications Officer, help set the vison for, implement, and execute a comprehensive focused communications and brand/PR strategy that supports the goals set in GLAAD’s Strategic Plan as well as the Annual Department workplan.
  • Spearhead the organization's day-to-day media relations, both proactive and reactive, including cultivating an extensive network of news contacts across social media and media platforms; draftingpress releases, media advisories, press statements, talking points, and opinion pieces; and prepping and staffing executive leadership for interviews, speaking engagements, and other .
  • In collaboration with GLAAD’s News/Rapid Response and GLAAD Media Institute programs, develop and implement multi-faceted, high-impact campaigns across all GLAAD programmatic areas that focus on impact and accelerating LGBTQ acceptance in an evergreen way, as well as around key events and dates including Spirit Day, Pride month, and Transgender Awareness Week.
  • Respond to inquiries from the wide variety of media outlets that reach out to GLAAD for responses and/or assistance in covering LGBTQ people and issues
  • Plan and direct a coordinated public relations and communications strategy in support of GLAAD’s priorities, amplifying GLAAD’s programming and ensuring greater visibility of GLAAD’s core messaging. This includes overseeing the identification and prioritization of key target audiences, and managing data to inform the GLAAD brand, communications and marketing strategies to achieve increased awareness and engagement with issues that further advance LGBTQ acceptance.
  • Attract, engage, and maintain high impact relationships with multiple and varied media sources and other key stakeholders.
  • Work with Social Media/Web Site and Creative Departments to grow GLAAD’s brand, social following, and web traffic.
  • Serve as producer of GLAAD Media Awards, working with the Communications team on nominations, honorees, award recipients and the stage show.
  • Responsible for media attention around key GLAAD reports, events including the GLAAD Media Awards, and responding to select breaking news items in real time that elevate GLAAD's visibility and key messaging on LGBTQ issues.
  • Serve as an ambassador and representative of GLAAD’s mission and core work in media interviews and at key progressive, communications, and LGBTQ conferences and events.

Communication Operations, Program Planning & Execution

  • Identify a diverse range of opportunities for GLAAD leadership to be represented in media outlets and at local and national events to promote GLAAD’s platform and core work of LGTBTQ acceptance.
  • Develop and expand the number of relationships with key media sources and influencers both locally and nationally to leverage significant news coverage and broad support around issues impacting the LGBTQ community.
  • Provide inspiring, strategic direction and oversight of Division leadership including GLAAD’s Creative Director, Director of Digital Communications, PR staff, and external PR firm partners in helping to help set the vision and standards for GLAAD’s brand identity, marketing and PR work, creative programming, GLAAD videos, web site and social media presence.
  • Develop and implement a media engagement strategy including diverse media outlets that drive digital and original content to help amplify GLAAD’s ideas, research and messaging as well as engagement with the LGBTQ community.
  • Promote the GLAAD culture and performance expectations across the Communications team.
  • Develop and track KPI and other metrics to help evaluate and substantiate the impact of GLAAD’s programming and influence on issues of importance to the LGBTQ community.
  • Prepare progress reports, quarterly reviews, and other strategic presentations to inform GLAAD leadership of the impact and outcomes of communication and media activities and programming.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing or related field.  
  • 12-15 years’ experience with a proven track record of increasing leadership responsibility for the communication and/or brand/PR operations for a PR/communications firm, substantial corporate brand or a cause-driven, advocacy or social impact organization.
  • Significant experience working with local and national media: print, broadcast, digital, and social
  • Demonstrated portfolio of successfully developing proactive, creative communications and media campaigns and events.

Physical RequiRements & Working Conditions

  • Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer.
  • Willingness to travel within the city and nationally as necessary; and work alternative work schedules and remotely as needed, including nights/weekends.

COMPENSATION

Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
