Our work tackles tough issues that shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. 

GLAAD operates with support from foundations, corporations and individuals from every corner of the United States. Our highly skilled team of more than 50 staff work out of our Headquarters in New York and an office in Los Angeles, and support our expanded reach through multiple chapters across the country. Over the past several years, GLAAD has achieved rapid and significant growth and currently has an annual operating budget of approximately $12 million.


The Opportunity

GLAAD is seeking a proven and impactful leader in HR. This position is located in the New York office. Our employees and organizational culture are the cornerstones of our success in delivering on our core mission, commitment and culture changing work to accelerate acceptance. The Senior Manager of People, Talent & Culture will be responsible for managing GLAAD’s HR strategy and support to ensure that GLAAD advances from its current HR operations to a strategic and cutting-edge HR 4.0 vision and capacity. This position will help manage our efforts to develop an inclusive and positive organizational culture, high quality talent recruiting strategy, impactful performance and learning system, comprehensive compensation strategy, and a nimble and employee friendly cloud based HR solution to support all of GLAAD’s core HR transactions, onboarding, benefits and HR workflow. The Senior Manager will contribute at both a hands-on and strategic level to support the CEO, COO and members of the leadership and management team to help foster an engaged employee experience, and provide an effective HR resource to help support the organization through its next phase of growth.


Key Responsibilities 

People Operations

  • Own, launch and provide exemplary leadership and management of all People Operations initiatives and employee engagement programs and activities
  • Serve as the escalation point for all employee relations issues and develop strategies and intervention to address them; help guide and support management and employee actions
  • Manage efforts and solutions in coaching, counseling and advising management and staff to ensure positive resolution of employment related matters
  • Utilize data and key performance metrics to identify trends and recommend proactive solutions for employee performance, retention and engagement
  • Build trust with employees across all layers of the organization and be an active listener and effective problem solver of employee issues while helping support organizational priorities and goals
  • Oversee the organization’s performance management program, policies and processes, including system design, individual development plans, result tracking, career pathways and succession planning
  • Help drive a high performing mindset that focuses on personal and professional development and career progression
  • Establish solutions and strategies to empower leaders to  better manage and prepare high-potential employees for management roles 
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to implement strategies for employee engagement and retention
  • Help support staff through the onboarding and introductory process to the organization
  • Develop and ensure that employment policies and practices are consistent with best practices and trends, fully compliant with applicable Federal, State and local law and other employer regulatory requirements governing the workplace
  • Participate in the exit interview process with employees and integrate feedback from this process to shape future people and retention strategy for the organization
  • Administer the organization’s compensation program, policies and procedures and ensure they are aligned with the organization’s goals and market competition
  • Help design a positive employee benefit program responsive to employee needs and administer all related processes, workflows and reporting requirements related to these plans


  • Develop and execute a talent strategy for the organization to attract and retain the best talent in the market promoting GLAAD as “employer of choice”
  • Provide out of the box thinking on how to attract and find talent in a competitive marketplace while building pipelining plan to cultivate talent pools and drive both quality and speed in the talent acquisition process
  • Partner with Managers to understand and anticipate hiring needs
  • Inspire and manage the organization’s diversity and inclusion program to ensure that talent recruited across the organization reflects the communities we represent
  • Manage the organization’s affirmative action program and other strategies to foster compliance with applicable law and regulatory programs that support diversity efforts
  • Select and manage all vendor and service provider partnerships to augment and support the overall talent strategy for the organization

Organization Culture

  • Help champion and build GLAAD’s organizational culture,  assisting employees across the organization adhere to our values through effective programs and internal communications that inspire commitment to GLAAD’s mission and a positive employee experience
  • Help cultivate an organizational culture that promotes exceptional talent, performance and the highest achievement in our people
  • Collaborate with the senior leadership team and managers on developing a culture of learning, and continuous feedback by creating experiences that engage teams at all levels
  • Coordinate all employee events and culture activities as well as people rewards and recognition programs

HR Systems & Support

  • Lead efforts to design and establish workflow processes that are nimble, maximize efficiency and are supported by cutting edge technology to ensure legal and regulatory compliance in all employment related activities and operations of the organization 
  • Maintain and manage the HR portal that tracks employee records and all onboarding and workflow processes including new hire documentation, leave time, performance evaluations, payroll interface, compensation and benefits and job status changes
  • Build the foundation of a strong data-driven People Ops organization that provides key performance metrics and people data to help support decision making for the organization
  • Implement and manage HR systems and workflow process that are nimble, fully digitized and have the capacity to scale up to support the planned growth and expansion of the organization
  • Help troubleshoot and positively resolve employee questions and issues related to all aspects of their employment experience with GLAAD
  • Maintain and develop systems to track all people time, attendance, leave balances and other employee data and facilitate this information through employee self-service options on the employee portal
  • Manage all outside vendor relationships and partners that support various aspects of the people, talent and culture function


Candidate Profile | Competencies | Personal Qualities

The ideal candidate should possess the following experience, competencies and personal qualities:

Experience | Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Human Resources or related field plus five (5) yearsof  HR/People Operations experience of which at least three years were at the Manager level; or Bachelor’s Degree plus 10 years of professional HR/People Operations experience of which at least five years were at the Manager level running the full spectrum of HR services
  • Proven successful track record of HR experience in a media, advocacy or other nonprofit setting is strongly preferred
  • Must have demonstrated experience in talent recruiting, building high performance teams and fostering a positive employee experience in organizations
  • Strong understanding of employment law, government compliance regulations, and building and administering compensation and benefit programs
  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of cloud based technology solutions to support all People operations
