Our work tackles tough issues that shape the narrative and provoke dialogue that leads to cultural change. 

GLAAD operates with support from foundations, corporations and individuals from every corner of the United States. Our highly skilled team of more than 50 staff work out of our Headquarters in New York and an office in Los Angeles, and support our expanded reach through multiple chapters across the country. Over the past several years, GLAAD has achieved rapid and significant growth and currently has an annual operating budget of approximately $12 million.

The Opportunity

GLAAD is seeking a highly experienced, self-driven and highly entrepreneurial communications expert to be a key strategic partner to the Chief Communications Office and VP of Programs in driving and leading GLAAD’s communications and media relations.   The Director of Communications reports to the Chief Communications Officer and directs GLAAD's external communications to a wide variety of audiences, including media, the LGBTQ community, and the public at large. The Director of Communications will spearhead GLAAD's extensive media relations efforts, both proactive and reactive, and is responsible for cultivating a wide network of top-level media contacts and influencers. This position will also develop and implement campaigns, content and strategic public engagement initiatives that lead to large-scale impact for the LGBTQ community. The Director of Communications must have a sharp sense for risk assessment as well as the ability to develop and articulate crisis strategies at a moment's notice. Finally, this position will assist other departments in developing communications plans and broader strategies to advance department goals including the GLAAD Media Awards production team. This position will be located in GLAAD's New York City office.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Works alongside GLAAD's Chief Communications Officer to develop, implement, and execute a long-term communications plan that supports goals set in GLAAD’s Strategic Plan as well as the annual department goals.
  • Spearheads the organization's day-to-day media relations, both proactive and reactive, including cultivating an extensive network of news contacts across media platforms; drafting press releases, media advisories, press statements, talking points, and opinion pieces; and prepping and staffing executive leadership for interviews, speaking engagements, and red carpet events.
  • In collaboration with GLAAD’s Programs Department, develop and implement multi-faceted, high-impact campaigns across all GLAAD programmatic areas that focus on impact and accelerating LGBTQ acceptance around key events and dates including Spirit Day, Pride month, and Transgender Awareness Week. 
  • Responsible for press attention around key GLAAD reports, events including the GLAAD Media Awards, and responding to select breaking news items in real time, elevating GLAAD's visibility and reputation as a leading voice on LGBTQ issues.
  • Leads process on selecting GLAAD Media Award nominees in select categories as assigned.
  • Create original GLAAD content that drives participation and engagement from the LGBTQ community and allies in GLAAD’s campaign work. 
  • Supervises and evaluates Communications Coordinator, external PR firms, and interns assigned to department.
  • Prepares weekly progress reports, quarterly reviews, and other reports as requested.
  • Represents the organization at key progressive, communications, and LGBTQ conferences and events.
  • Completes other tasks as assigned.


Candidate Profile | Competencies | Personal Qualities

The ideal candidate should possess the following experience, competencies and personal qualities:

Experience | Education

  • BA/BS degree in Marketing, Public Relations or Communications with a minimum of five years' experience in a related field.
  • Two years' experience in a senior management position. REQUIRED
  • Expert communications skills, both written and spoken, across all media platforms.
  • Experience writing media releases, advisories, op-eds, and pitches.
  • Prior experience working with and already established network of high-level media contacts.
  • Experience managing staff and interns.
  • Experience in overseeing a budget.
  • Expertise in measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of media plans and coverage.
  • Computer and Internet literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite and Google Docs.
  • Willingness to travel
  • Strong working knowledge of history and issues regarding LGBTQ issues and media representation.
  • Requires outstanding leadership skills and the ability to manage professional and support staff members as well as advise senior level management team.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
