GLAAD operates with support from foundations, corporations and individuals from every corner of the United States. Our highly skilled team of more than 50 staff work out of our Headquarters in New York and an office in Los Angeles, and support our expanded reach through multiple chapters across the country. Over the past several years, GLAAD has achieved rapid and significant growth and currently has an annual operating budget of approximately $12 million.

The Opportunity

The Communications Coordinator works on highly visible communications for the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy team, with a front row view of the most talked about LGBTQ news, devising communications for GLAAD as well as the LGBTQ movement as a whole. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Communications Coordinator develops and executes GLAAD’s communications strategy; conducts public relations about GLAAD’s work; fields media requests; completes admin tasks; drafts communications, talking points, and event marketing materials. The Communications Coordinator also plays a key role in the development of the GLAAD Media Awards and nominee selection. The ideal candidate is an outstanding writer with strong attention to detail, knowledge of and passion for LGBTQ issues, and works well in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

General GLAAD Communications

  • Collaborate with communications team to execute communications strategy that builds profile of GLAAD’s campaigns and leadership
  • Assist with the development of press releases, public statements, talking points, and other communications materials
  • Support campaign execution of GLAAD's work to elevate LGBTQ issues and people in the media
  • Draft all press materials for key GLAAD initiatives including the GLAAD Media Awards, Spirit Day, Concert for Love and Acceptance, San Francisco Gala, and research
  • Help lead GLAAD's relationship with LGBTQ and other media
  • Write content about GLAAD's work for GLAAD publications and newsletters
  • Provide administrative support to the communications team
  • Create original GLAAD content that drives participation and engagement from the LGBTQ community and allies in GLAAD's campaign work
  • Supervise Communications Interns
  • Develop and execute media strategy for GLAAD partnerships
  • Prepare weekly progress reports, quarterly reviews, and other reports as required
  • Prepare weekly Communications updates for staff
  • Complete other tasks as assigned



  • Regularly review nominee categories and selection process to ensure integrity and transparency of GLAAD Media Awards program
  • Monitor entertainment, news, online, and other media year-round in order to create a database of potential nominees in all categories
  • Implement annual Call for Submissions for nomination consideration, including content for
  • Process materials and submission fees resulting from Call for Submissions. Integrate into nominee selection procedures
  • Manage the creation of an online ballot, voter database, and the award recipient selection process


 Candidate Profile | Competencies | Personal Qualities

The ideal candidate should possess the following experience, competencies and personal qualities:

  • Required:  Professional experience in public relations or communications
  • Required:  Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, or a related field, or comparable professional experience
  • Required: Demonstrated ability to research, write and convey complex and fact-checked information in a variety of formats to a variety of audiences (e.g., media professionals, donors, and other stakeholders)
  • Required:  Deep understanding of key issues facing the LGBTQ community
  • Demonstrated copy-editing ability, including working knowledge of Associated Press style
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite 
  • Self-starter, able to juggle multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Passionately concerned and conversant regarding LGBTQ issues, with a strong desire to make a difference
  • Inclusiveness is a vital part of GLAAD’s work. Candidates must have skills necessary to collaborate within a diverse and inclusive environment
  • Ability to travel occasionally 
  • Spanish language fluency a plus; knowledge and/or interest in current events, politics and legislative policy a plus
