#VoteWithUs couple nominated for Irish LGBT ally award

Brighid and Paddy Whyte , an elderly married couple from Ireland, have been nominated at the GALAS LGBT Awards for their sincere videos submitted to the #VoteWithUs campaign for marriage equality in Ireland. They have been nominated in the category of "LGBT Ally," for their work with the #VoteWithUs campaign for the referendum for equal marriage in Ireland.

The GALAS LGBT awards are often given to public figures, such as politicians and television personalities. This year, the nominees for "LGBT Ally" include former Irish president Mary MacAleese, popular political analyst Noel Whelan, and television/radio presenter Gay Byrne. However, Brighid & Paddy are everyday Irish citizens from Louth, Ireland, who have been married for 50 years.

Ireland's 7th annual GALAS LGBT awards, an event dedicated to LGBT individuals and allies who advance the cause, will be held on February 27, 2016 . This will be an especially exciting ceremony, following the referendum to Irish law on May 22nd that allowed for same-sex marriage for the entire country, thanks, in part, to the tireless work of many of the nominees.

In 2015, #VoteWithUs began compiling videos of regular people whose lives would be made better by the introduction of equal marriage in Ireland. The campaign, which worked with GLAAD to maximize outreach, gathered more than 150 videos, including a video of GLAAD's CEO & President, Sarah Kate Ellis.

Among all the other videos, Brighid & Paddy's stood out. Devout Roman Catholics and LGBT allies, they first submitted a video for #VoteWithUs to urge people not only to support marriage equality in Ireland, but to make sure they get out and vote. In their sincere and moving video, they wished that "other couples, gay or straight, could legally avail of civil marriage and have the opportunity to experience the love, protection, and companionship [they] have experienced."

This video was such a hit that Brighid & Paddy later posted another to help make one final appeal to voters.

Brighid & Paddy have been admired not only for their contribution to #VoteWithUs, but for their endearing relationship-- an inspiration for all couples, gay or straight, who choose to marry and experience the kind of companionship seen in Brighid & Paddy's video.

The #VoteWithUs campaign is nominated for the GALAS awards in the Online Awards category, and Brighid & Paddy are nominated in the LGBT Ally category. We are happy to see regular people getting recognized for doing the right thing, and wish Brighid & Paddy the best of luck at the GALAS awards!

Make sure to keep an eye out for Brighid & Paddy at the GALAS awards on February 27th, along with looking out for the GLAAD Media Awards on April 2nd in Los Angeles and May 14 in New York City.
