From Telemundo to Jenni Rivera: Feeling the Spirit Day Love and Support

What an amazing few days it’s been at GLAAD, starting yesterday with our interview on the Jenni Rivera radio show. We also saw today that all of the hosts on Telemundo’s morning show Levántate and on Al Rojo Vivo wore purple and talked about Spirit Day (and by a Telemundo official’s estimates, 70% of all Telemundo employees went purple today).

Last night at the Billboard Awards for Mexican music, Jenni Rivera performed dressed in purple and Kate del Castillo showed her support from the red carpet.

Other accomplishments: the White House turned its Facebook profile picture purple; LAX turned its lights purple for Spirit Day, and both Padrisimo Magazine and  MTV  changed their logos to purple (For MTV, this marked the second time in the network's history that it changes its logo's color for a cause).

It's a great feeling to think of the support LGBT youth and their family and friends will feel. For a lot of us, as young LGBT people we felt very alone and a message like this of support

would have been phenomenal. Now, thanks to celebrities like Paulina RubioChristian ChávezRicky Martin, and Dr. Ana María Polo, and networks like Telemundo, LGBT Latino youth can see that they have support from their community; and from Spirit Day's visibility in the media, dialogue around acceptance, inclusion and respect has been started, reignited or continued among many Latino families with LGBT family members and friends.

It inspires us at GLAAD to keep working for a world that accepts young people regardess of their orientation or skin color or appearance. So that they can feel empowered to keep building their lives, without fear and instead with pride, and to help make the world a better place for future generations.
