Target wants customers to #TakePride in new LGBT-inclusive campaign

June is LGBT Pride Month! To celebrate, Target launched its official LGBT Pride campaign, #TakePride, this week, featuring rainbow-themed merchandise and adverts expressing support for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.

The Minnesota-based retail giant's Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, Laysha Ward, said in a company statement, "We're making our message loud and clear: Target proudly stands with the LGBT community, both as a team member and team player through all that we do."

This year's #TakePride line is the latest of Target's efforts to accelerate acceptance within its clientele.

The current campaign released a video called the Target Pride Manifesto, which showcases same-sex couples' wedding proposals, the movement for marriage equality, and even excerpts from the 1978 Gay Freedom Day parade at which Harvey Milk declared, "We are coming out!" The video also portrays family and the universal struggles of growing up because—at the end of the day—Pride month is about everyone coming together. The Target Pride Manifesto says it all: "We take pride, pride in celebrating who we were born to be."

Target's official #TakePride webpage stated, "To Target, pride does not just start and end in June, it is a year-round commitment." Their centerpiece video emphasizes the importance of living an out life: "To be heard, to be seen, to belong, to be accepted for how we live, respected for who we love."

So ring in this hot summer of parades with rainbow flip-flops or swim trunks, but, more importantly, share the Target Pride Manifesto with a friend. Follow Target's example, and let the LGBT community know that you have got their back.
