State Representative Mike Reynolds of Oklahoma City is attempting to reinstate the discriminatory “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law for the Oklahoma National Guard. Representative Reynolds introduced House Bill 2195 in an effort to revert the Oklahoma National Guard enlistment requirements to those that were in effect on January 1, 2009. If passed, this bill would effectively reinstate “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” for Oklahomans wishing to serve their state and their country.

GLAAD has consistently called on the media to report on all aspects of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” fairly and accurately. Survey after survey has revealed that the American people, across all demographic groups, supported the repeal of this law and favored allowing troops to serve openly.

GLAAD urges our constituents in Oklahoma to keep an eye on media coverage of the proposed Oklahoma bill. Specifically, look for coverage making claims or stating as fact any false, anti-gay opinions and stereotypes about openly gay and lesbian service members. It is important that the media coverage of the Oklahoma bill be fair and accurate by continuing to report on the overwhelming numbers who support the open service of all dedicated National Guard members, including those who are gay and lesbian.
