#SpiritDay Ambassadors Featured On HuffPost Gay Voices This Week! Read Post From Trans Advocate Janet Mock!

With Spirit Day just around the corner on Friday, October 19, The Huffington Post’s Gay Voices section will feature a blog post from one of GLAAD’s Spirit Day Ambassadors each day this week. Today, transgender advocate and writer Janet Mock explains why she is going purple to stand in support of LGBT youth and against bullying on October 19. In her post, Janet recounts how her own experience as a transgender girl was improved by the acceptance she received from peers in her school’s LGBT support group, Chrysalis. She writes:

“Looking back on myself -- a 16-year-old trans girl with Beyoncé braids and dreams of being a writer in New York -- I marvel at how forward we were with the creation of this group, a necessary space that's needed more than ever in schools everywhere. That sense of visible solidarity is why I'm wearing purple this Oct. 19 for Spirit Day.”

She continues, “I believe that wearing purple on this day will do for LGBTQ youth what Chrysalis did for me at a time when I needed it most: It will help them see themselves reflected in the faces and stories of people like them, or validated by allies who understand and affirm them. That level of visibility is empowering.”
