Marriage equality comes to Facebook
As Facebook unveiled new timeline icons for married same-sex couples, GLAAD worked in media outlets including The Los Angeles Times, MSNBC, and The Huffington Post to underline the cultural significance of the move. Last year, GLAAD worked with the social media giant to add ‘In a Civil Union’ and ‘In a Domestic Partnership’ option to users’ profiles. Read more.
Frontiers Magazine: ‘GLAAD is back’
L.A.’s largest LGBT weekly, Frontiers Magazine, published a feature story about GLAAD’s work to secure equality through the media, praising the leadership of GLAAD’s recently appointed President, Herndon Graddick. “Under Graddick’s leadership, it appears that the ‘new’ GLAAD is back to its original watchdog mission of taking names, kicking ass and reclaiming family values for LGBT people,” writes journalist Karen Ocamb. GLAAD brings pro-LGBT voices of faith to The Washington Post
In the wake of CNN host Anderson Cooper’s announcement that he’s gay, GLAAD worked with The Washington Post to showcase LGBT-affirming voices of faith, who share their reaction and support for Anderson and the LGBT community. Frank Ocean discusses same-sex relationship; GLAAD highlights impact
GLAAD staff commented on hip hop producer Frank Ocean’s letter in which he discussed having a same-sex relationship, echoing the support from LGBT community and allies in the music industry. GLAAD’s Director of Media and Community Partnerships Daryl Hannah was quoted by XXL magazine, a traditionally urban magazine. Read more.
GLAAD helps transgender advocate Moncia Roberts challenge transphobia in urban media
GLAAD helped trans advocate Monica Roberts place a commentary on Loop21.com about the transphobia on the VH1 reality show Love and Hip Hop Atlanta. Several media outlets, including VH1.com, questioned the gender identity of one of the cast mates because she didn’t “look like a women.” In her article, Roberts reminds us that women are all different.
