GLAAD’s Media Field Strategy team worked closely with Dr. Wilhelmina Perry, convener of LGBT Faith Leaders of African Descent, to place an op-ed in The Amsterdam News—New York City’s oldest and largest Black newspaper—discussing the effects of homelessness on LGBT youth in New York City.
- John Huppenthal, Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction, recently apologized to the LGBT community after he made disparaging comments about gay and lesbian people. Huppenthal’s apology came after GLAAD and Equality Arizona called attention to his statements noting them as “highly offensive.” Coverage of the apology appeared in the Arizona Republic as well as the Tucson Citizen.
Following GLAAD outreach, The Huffington Post removed an article that featured problematic language about transgender people. After meeting with Huffington Post staff, GLAAD is working with the site to help acknowledge more inclusive and accurate stories of transgender people.
- GLAAD’s Media Field Strategy team recently worked with Rev. Jamie Washington, associate pastor of the Unity Fellowship Church of Baltimore, to place a letter to the editor in The Baltimore Sun focusing on the growing number of African-American ministers in Maryland—openly gay and straight—that show support for the LGBT community.
