Wonder what we’re up to at GLAAD?
Be sure to check out GLAAD Blog each week for updates about our latest work to build support for LGBT equality through news, entertainment and online media.
- GLAAD’s Media Field Strategy team worked with Ed Mullen—executive director of Equality Ohio—and the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) to place an op-ed in the Chillicothe Gazette in response to the physical bullying of a Union-Scioto High School student perceived to be gay. The incident was recorded on a cell-phone and was aired on the local news by an ABC affiliate.
Following the brutal attack of Burke Burnett—a 26-year-old openly gay man from Paris, TX—GLAAD worked Burke’s legal counsel, Equality Texas and the Anti-Defamation League’s North Texas Regional Office offering support with messaging and providing media training in the form of talking points and interviewing techniques. GLAAD has also acted as media liaison for Burke Burnett advocating for coverage of his story and coordinated a live appearance for Burke on MSNBC with Thomas Roberts.
- GLAAD recently provided interviewing techniques, talking points and a media information session to Tammy Simpson, the mother of Brand Bitner—who died by suicide in Pennsylvania last November. Media outlets like The Daily Item interviewed Simpson and wrote pieces in honor of the one year anniversary of her son’s death.
- GLAAD provided talking points and interviewing strategies to Rebecca Collins and Stacy Gordon, the mothers of the boys who were physically bullied in Chillicothe and Westerville, OH, respectively.
