Wonder what we’re up to at GLAAD?
Be sure to check out GLAAD Blog each week for updates about our latest work to build support for LGBT through news, entertainment and online media.
Last week, GLAAD partnered with a number of celebrities, corporations, media outlets, schools and local, national and faith-based organizations for Spirit Day 2011. On Spirit Day, millions of Americans wore purple in support of LGBT youth and to take stand against bullying. This year’s Spirit Day was widely successful and even received support and recognition from the White House.
- GLAAD’s Spanish-Language Media team recently trained the writers, producers and co-hosts of Noche de Perros (Guys Night Out), which airs on TeleFutura, a part of Univision Network. The training consisted of a discussion about terminology choices and the potential challenges and opportunities that arise from comedic representations of LGBT people.
- GLAAD’s Religion, Faith and Values team worked with Methodists In a New Direction (MIND) to help launch We do! Methodists Living Marriage Equality, an initiative that unified 900 United Methodists in support of marriage equality.
President Barack Obama honored Janice Langbehn last week with the Presidential Citizens Medal in recognition of her work to secure hospital visitation protections for all couples. GLAAD brought Janice’s story to the New York Times in 2009, and it’s that same article that caught the President’s eye. Shortly after the story was published, President Obama called Janice to personally apologize for the way her family was treated and pledged to sign a memorandum that would extend hospital visitation protections to all families. GLAAD also nominated Janice for the President’s honor.
