GLAAD helped to bring the Oscar-winning team behind MILK to the Side By Side LGBT Film Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia. Screening the LGBT pioneer's biopic is an important way to represent LGBT people and the difficulties they may face, particularly as the LGBT community in Russia faces oppression and isolation under the country's anti-gay propaganda laws and violence. Director Gus Van Sant, Producer Bruce Cohen, and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black will host a special screening of MILK on Nov. 30, followed by Q&A with the team. All of the MILK team was excited about the opportunity to use his film to stand in solidarity with them. Read more here."
GLAAD has been keeping its followers informed about TransAdvocate's news coverage of the anti-LGBT Pacific Justice Institute (PJI)'s on-going discriminatory antics. After spreading lies about a transgender teenage girl and trans kids in general to people and major media outlets around the world, PJI was told "enough is enough." The blog TransAdvocate rallied its team, supporters, and online participants to protest PJI at its headquarters and through social media using #JD4PJI to spread the conversation. When the latest protest took shape, GLAAD connected TransAdvocate with media support to ensure their message would be heard far and wide. Read more here.
Tiq Milan, GLAAD's Senior Media Strategist, was featured in two major media outlets promoting advocacy for the LGBT community. BET.com published an op-ed written by Tiq, entitled "Our Lives Are Valuabe," about the epidemic of violence against trans women of color; and the importance of bringing these tragedies to the forefront of the Black community's, LGBT community's, and the world at large's attention. He was also interviewed by Al Jazeera America about health care equality and other hurdles for trans people.
Last spring, Bryant Huddleston was banned from speaking at a high school because he is gay. With GLAAD's help, Bryant was able to talk nationally about facing discrimination. He has now been heard at Philander Smith College in Arkansas to talk about being an LGBT parenting advocate. Read more here.
GLAAD's Spanish-Language and Latin@ Media Team pitched and placed two Latina transgender leaders on the show Sin Límites. Mariana Marroquin, from the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center and Arianna Inurritegui, from Miami both appeared on the show. They discussed the challenges faced my many transgender people, including sky high murder and violence rates as well as employment discrimination. Arianna also discussed the death of her good friend Angie Sam many years ago, the person she would honor on Transgender Day of Remembrance. Sin Límites is aired on CNN's Spanish-language broadcast network CNN Latino and airs nightly in 7 key markets with large Latino populations: New York, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Miami, Orlando, Tampa and Salt Lake City.
