Ricky Martin & music artists lead Puerto Rico protests

Ricky Martin is among a number of artists and thousands of citizens calling for the resignation of Puerto Rico governor Ricardo Rosselló.

Rosselló finds himself in a massive political crisis in part because a trove of homophobic and misogynistic communications that were recently made public. Martin was criticized in some of the more than 800 leaked communications which also included derisive comments about hurricane victims. Investigations into corruption have also caused a loss of public confidence in Rosselló and his administration.

Many artists at Thursday night’s Premios Juventud on Univision made the quote of the night “Ricky renuncia” or ”Ricky resign.”

Throughout the show, musicians took the opportunity to reach fans with impassioned messages for political change and equality well beyond Puerto Rico's current crisis.

The show included several LGBTQ artists including singer Joy Huerta of Jesse & Joy. The brother-sister duo were honored as “agents of change” for their work on behalf of animal rights and environmental causes. Huerta announced several months ago that she was married to a woman with whom she was expecting a baby. Huerta had the message "close the camps" on her arm in a photo from the awards.

Brazilian drag super star and singer Pabllo Vittar was also a presenter on Premios Juventud.

Also presenting were the actors who play boyfriends Aris and Temo on a Mexican novela, whom fans have dubbed Aristemo. The novela El Corazón Nunca se Equivoca which follows the couple's move to Mexico City, premieres Aug. 16 on Univision.
