Remembering lives lost in 2015

On November 20th, the City of West Hollywood gathered to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). TDOR is set aside annually to memorialize those who have been killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. TDOR serves to publicly mourn and honor the lives of fallen trans brothers and sisters and to bring public awareness to ongoing hate crimes against the transgender community. The program included several speeches by transgender leaders as well as city officials. The program also included a special performance from Alexandra Billings and Our Lady J. following the reading of the names. Attendees then marched around the streets of West Hollywood in honor of those whose lives were lost in 2015. I was saddened by all the losses, and inspired to support the struggle against injustice as an ally. 22 transgender and gender nonconforming people lost their lives to violence this year just in the U.S. alone, 19 of whom were women of color. As the theme of the event proclaims "not 1 more/ni una más."
