Record number of LGBTQ nominees in outstanding host in reality or reality-competition program category for 70th Annual Emmy Awards

Four out of this year’s five nominees in the Outstanding Host in Reality or Reality-Competition Program Category are LGBTQ personalities, a record number of LGBTQ nominees for any Emmy Category.

The list includes RuPaul Charles for RuPaul’s Drag Race, Tim Gunn (alongside co-host Heidi Klum) for Project Runway, Jane Lynch for Hollywood Game Night, and Ellen DeGeneres for Ellen’s Game of Games. Ally W. Kamau Bell was also nominated for his work on United Shades of America.

For the past five years, an LGBTQ nominee has won the Emmy in this category. The current awardee, RuPaul Charles, has won the category for the past two consecutive years in 2016 and 2017 for his work on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Jane Lynch won the Emmy in 2014 and 2015 for Hollywood Game Night, while Tim Gunn shared the honor with Heidi Klum in 2013 for Project Runway. Jane Lynch was previously honored for her performance on Glee as Sue Sylvester, winning the Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series from three nominations.

Although three of this year’s nominees have received nominations in the past for this category, this is the first time that all three are joined by Ellen DeGeneres, who has been honored for her talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show and for her sitcom Ellen in the past, accounting for her 30 total Emmy Awards over her career.

RuPaul, who was awarded the Vito Russo Award during the 1999 GLAAD Media Awards and the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Reality Program during the 2010 ceremony, and RuPaul's Drag Race, has garnered 23 Emmy nominations in a variety of technical and major categories.
