Openly gay Puerto Rican boxer marries his boyfriend in NY

Primera Hora, a Puerto Rican website and Washington Blade, an LGBT newspaper both inform us that congratulations are in order for openly gay boxer Orlando "El Fenomeno" Cruz and his partner Jose Manuel Colon, who married yesterday in New York. Love and celebrations of love make it possible for activists to continue the fight for the dignity of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people both on the mainland and on the island.

According to USA Today, It is now not possible to fire an LGBT person in Puerto Rico just because of their sexual orientation or gender identity after they passed an ENDA like provision. However, it is also not possible for LGBT parents to adopt their children in order to protect their parental rights after their Supreme Court ruling. The island's Justice Department decided to prosecute a hate crime against a gay man, but according to the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs violence against LGBT people increased between 2010 and 2012. Some Puerto Rican politicians have bravely and justly worked to let love win out so that LGBT people can live full, equal lives but some have not.

So it is wonderful to celebrate with Orlando and Jose and to hope that their courage and conviction will continue to help open the doors so that others in Puerto Rico can live their authentic lives without fear of repression and discrimination. Felicidades!
