The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Community Center of New York released a video today about the use of pronouns. In the video, four students talk about the importance of allies using the correct gender pronouns to validate a person's identity and acknowledge the acceptance of that gender identity. Watch the video below to hear what they have to say about the correct use of pronouns.
The video, to which former GLAAD intern Jessica Rozycki produced, was released during Trans Awareness Week. Late last week, GLAAD launched trans microaggressions photo project that raises awareness to the subtle slights often heard by transgender people. It is necessary for allies to be aware of the language that they use when addressing transgender people. Microaggressions often invalidate a person's identity, thus making the call for the use of correct pronouns even more vital.
Today, it is also important to recognize Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day that honors the memories of those who have lost their lives to acts of anti-transgender violence. For more information regarding Transgender Day of Remembrance, be sure to read this post about this day of respect.
