On Saturday night, October 5, the Los Angeles trans community will gather for food, fun and a good cause as they support Gender Justice LA at their annual "TransRoots Get Down" fundraising event. There will be a full dinner (with veggie options), music, and performers at the All Saints Event Hall in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Gender Justice LA (GJLA) is a grassroots organization that is building the power of the transgender community in Los Angeles. They use community organizing and leadership development to make concrete changes in the lives of all trans people, especially low-income trans people of color.
GLAAD is proud to be a sponsor of "TransRoots Get Down." Over the past several months GLAAD has worked with GJLA to address problematic coverage of the transgender community in Southern California. After a meeting with the Los Angeles Times in April, regarding a problematic story about the murder of a local transgender woman, GLAAD and GJLA were invited by the Los Angeles chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists to participate in a panel discussion about transgender representations in journalism. And in June, GLAAD pitched the LA Times on covering Trans Pride L.A., resulting in a story which focused on the good community organizing work being done by GJLA and others.
