MTV and Logo have announced the Emmy-nominated It Gets Better Project will return with a new hour long “It Gets Better” special to air on October 9 at 11:00pm, just ahead of National Coming Out Day and Spirit Day.
The first “It Gets Better” special aired in February 2012 and has been nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Children’s Nonfiction, Reality or Reality-Competition Program category. The special focused on the stories of three young people at crossroads in their lives: a high school boy struggling with coming out to family and friends, a lesbian fighting for parental acceptance and a transgender man preparing for his wedding. The episode is available to watch now at MTV.com.
In addition, this weekend the It Gets Better Project as a whole was honored by The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Board of Governors prestigious Governors Award during the 2012 Creative Arts Emmy Awards. The Governors Award, created in 1978, salutes an individual, company or organization that has made a substantial impact and demonstrated the extraordinary use of television. The award was accepted by It Gets Better creators, Dan Savage and his partner Terry Miller.
A two hour special of selected highlights from the Creative Arts Emmy Awards can be seen on the Reelz Channel Saturday, September 22 at 8:00pm, while the Primetime Emmy Awards air on ABC on Sunday, September 23 at 7:00pm eastern/4:00pm pacific.
