Starting as a grassroots initiative that began in 2004, Intersex Awareness Day (IAD) help intersex people make their voices heard. Eleven years later, the intersex community has made huge strides forward towards equal representation and recognition.
Since the first IAD, the U.N. declared "intersex medical care" (which is actually harmful to intersex people) as official human rights abuses and Malta passed the world's first comprehensive intersex protection law. IAD has grown to include film screenings, talk-backs, and similar awareness events internationally to create platforms for intersex people to talk about their lives, their struggles, and their achievements.
This year, on Monday, October 26th, #IntersexAwarenessDay will go viral as prominent activist and one the campaign's leader Pidgeon Pagonis attempts to enlist your help by creating a twitterstorm to help spread awareness about the intersex community and its experiences, and asking anyone on the web to participate in the international campaign.
Help Pidgeon Pagonis and the Intersex community trend Intersex Awareness Day on twitter and affirm the intersex community by joining the global twitterstorm today. Tweet with the hashtag #IntersexAwarenessDay or #IntersexStories to show that you stand with Intersex people all around the world on October 26th.
