This year’s #SpiritDay collection on Hulu includes a wide variety of film and television, including the hit 2019 film Booksmart, which this summer won the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Film - Wide Release. Also available this year are the critically-acclaimed GLAAD Media Award-nominated films Rocketman and Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Hulu recently acquired the Australian kids series First Day, which follows a transgender teenage (played by trans actress Evie Macdonald) as she begins middle school as her authentic self. This past summer, Hulu premiered the Original Series Love, Victor, which is also a part of this year’s collection. A spinoff of the hit 2018 film, Love, Simon, the show follows Victor Salazar as he begins his new life at Creekwood High School on his own journey of self-discovery, facing challenges at home, adjusting to a new city, and struggling with his sexual orientation. GLAAD’s head of talent, Anthony Ramos, spoke with series stars Michael Cimino (who plays Victor) and Ana Ortiz (who plays his mom), earlier in the year.

If you've got a bit more time to spare, check out the latest Freeform series from Josh Thomas, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, Hulu Original Shrill (starring Saturday Night Live’s Aidy Bryant), The Bisexual, Happy Endings, and Marvel's Runaways. Additional GLAAD Media Award-winners The Bravest Knight and Steven Universe, as well as Brooklyn Nine-Nine, help round out this incredible collection.

Whether it’s your first time watching these films and series - or just an opportunity to revisit some of your favorites - Hulu’s #SpiritDay collection is a great place to start getting into the “Spirit” this week!

About Spirit Day

Each year, millions go purple for GLAAD’s Spirit Day to support LGBTQ youth in a united stand against bullying. Started in 2010 by high school student Brittany McMillan in response to numerous young LGBTQ lives lost to suicide, Spirit Day now draws the participation of celebrities, schools, faith institutions, national landmarks, corporations, media outlets, sports leagues, and advocates around the world, all joining together to stand against bullying and support LGBTQ youth.

Presenting partners Delta Air Lines, Kellogg Company, and Target, official partners Amazon, NYC Department of Youth and Community Development and the New York City Council, and Skittles, as well as community partners Kirkland & Ellis, NBA & WNBA will all participate in 2020 Spirit Day.

In 2020, Spirit Day takes on a renewed importance due to the unprecedented challenges facing LGBTQ youth. This year, many LGBTQ youth are beginning the school year at home and are unable to attend in-person meetings of Gay-Straight Alliances, Gender-Sexuality Alliances or on-campus college LGBTQ organizations. Some LGBTQ youth may be confined to a home environment that may be unsupportive or abusive. Calls to The Trevor Project’s hotline for LGBTQ youth have at times more than doubled since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

This year, Spirit Day is on October 15, 2020. Take the Spirit Day pledge to show LGBTQ youth you've got their backs at Follow @GLAAD on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to keep up to date with #SpiritDay news.
