Help Spread the Word About Transgender Day of Remembrance Through Social Media

In addition to attending an event in honor of the Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20, GLAAD encourages transgender individuals, as well as families, friends, and allies to help raise awareness about this important day through social media. The Transgender Day of Remembrance page on Facebook has provided the tools to do so. Starting yesterday, people across the world began changing their profile pictures on Twitter and Facebook to show their support for the transgender community and their commitment to ending bias-motivated violence. Over the course of the weekend, many more will do the same, helping to spread the word about the significance of this day to a wider range of people than ever before.

According to polling data from 2008, only 8% of Americans said they either worked with or personally knew a transgender person. Despite this finding, individuals can still stand in solidarity with the transgender community through social media. On the Transgender Day of Remembrance Facebook page, there are various images once can use in place of their profile picture, as well as a customized tweet highlighting the unacceptable violence experienced by transgender people. You can download one of these images here and show your online network that you support an end to violence.
