Growing bi representation honored with GLAAD Media Award nominations

Today, GLAAD announced the nominees for the 27th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, and the list includes numerous bisexual-related stories and bi+ characters, spanning from the small to silver screen; to online providers; from comic books to music; who made an impact on the media in 2015.

According to GLAAD's Where We Are on TV report, bisexual representations rose in 2015 on both broadcast and cable with a notable increase of bisexuals appearing on cable programs. Unfortunately, many of these characters still fall into dangerous stereotypes about bisexual people. However, a growing number of moments in entertainment captured well-rounded, responsible, and diverse depictions of bisexuality, and GLAAD is celebrating those moments with Media Award nominations.

From the recently-divorced doctor, Callie Tores on Grey's Anatomy, who is proudly out to her coworkers; to Miley Cyrus, whose persona pervades the media and brings perhaps unparalleled attention to genderqueer and pansexual identities; to How to Get Away with Murder's complex powerhouse Annalise Keating; to the laugh-out-loud funny yet truthfully human Appropriate Behavior, in which Shirin navigates being a bisexual Persian young woman in and out of her first same-sex relationship; to Andrea Stanley's "Just Your Average (Transgender) Teen," and Jazz Jennings, bringing lives of trans members of the bi+ community to teen and young adult readers; and more, many of the nominees highlight what it means to be bisexual and living at the intersections of various identities.

Shows like Orange is the New Black and Transparent, in which characters attracted to more than one gender are essentially ubiquitous, and the film Tig, a documentary following lesbian comedian Tig Notaro and her committed relationship with (and eventually marriage to) her bisexual partner Stephanie, illustrate the growing representation of bi+ lives through ground-breaking media spaces, like Amazon and Netflix.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD's work to amplify stories from the LGBT community and issues that build support for equality.
