Great story of love, family, and hair from a Latino trans man

Asher Diaz spent years trying to "understand what it meant to be a beautiful woman." In a piece that aired on NPR's Latino USA, Asher, who is a transgender man, shares his first experiences related to gender and identity. Diaz recalls running away from his aunt, who was carrying a curling iron and wanted to do his hair. "But I am a boy," he declared. At first, his family didn't know what to do with sentiments like those, but when Asher began his transition in his 20s, these earlier moments began to make sense. The response from his family was a pleasant surprise, affirming the importance of family acceptance for many LGBT people. Latino USA reaches a large number of listeners and has won numerous awards and accolades for its work to shine a spotlight on the Latino community.
