The documentary The New Black, which has been nominated for a GLAAD Media Award this year, will enjoy another theatrical run February 12-18 at New York City's Film Forum. The New Black follows African American faith leaders and LGBT advocates to explore how Black, faith, and LGBT communities intersected in Maryland's campaign for marriage equality. GLAAD readers can get a special offer of one free popcorn Monday-Friday at the 1:10, 2:55 and 4:40 shows, simply mention GLAAD Media Awards at concession to redeem. Check out the film's trailer below.

“This film is critical for African American people of faith because while it powerfully portrays the courage, determination and humanity of persons on both sides of this controversial issue, it also uncovers the homophobia and heterosexism that continue to plague and divide black churches, families and communities,” says Reverend Dennis W. Wiley, Ph.D., Pastor of Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ in Washington, D.C. “In the final analysis, it makes a compelling case that gay rights are indeed civil rights, that all citizens deserve equal justice under the law, and that every human being is a child of God.”

This theatrical run of The New Black is part of Black History Month, which is a time to recognize the accomplishments, journeys, and contributions of African Americans throughout history. This year, as in years past, GLAAD is working to ensure that the lives of Black LGBT people are included in the celebration. Throughout the month of February, GLAAD will be sharing graphics that honor Black LGBT icons -- including advocates, authors, entertainers, and intellectuals.
