The GLAAD Wrap: VMA Nominations, New 'Transparent' trailer, 'Wynonna Earp' renewed, and more!

Every week, the GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend!

1) In anticipation of the fall return of the Emmy-Award winning sitcom Will & Grace, WE tv will be airing some of the most iconic episodes of the beloved show! Beginning Saturday, August 19th and ending Saturday, September 16th, WE tv will air back-to-back episodes from 10:00am ET/PT until 5:00pm ET/PT every Saturday. The five week event will highlight the best episodes of each of the four main characters as well as the best guest performances on the show. Find the full list of episodes that will air during the rerun promotion here.

2) A new teaser trailer was released for the second season of out comedian Tig Notaro’s dark comedy One Mississippi. The second season picks up with Tig living in her family’s home in Mississippi with her stepfather Bill (John Rothman) and her brother Remy (Noah Harpster). Be sure to catch season two of One Mississippi on September 8th on Amazon, and in the meantime check out the new teaser below!

3) The official series trailer for Star Trek: Discovery was unveiled this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con. The series will feature a new ship and new characters while still bringing Star Trek’s characteristic hope for the future. At the Star Trek: Discovery panel, it was also revealed that out actor Wilson Cruz will play Lt Paul Stamets’s (Anthony Rapp) partner. Be sure to catch the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery on Sunday, September 24th at 8:30 pm ET/PT on CBS, and all subsequent episodes on CBS All Access.

4) A new trailer has been released for season four of Emmy and GLAAD Media Award-winning comedy Transparent. As shown in the trailer, season four will take Maura (Jeffrey Tambor) to Isreal to speak at a conference, where she is swiftly followed by the rest of the Pfeffermans. Transparent continues to further the conversation about LGBTQ issues, with so many queer and transgender people both on and behind the camera. Season four will be released on Amazon Prime on September 22nd, and you can watch the new trailer below!

5) Wynonna Earp is coming back for a third season! SyFy announced the renewal of the breakout supernatural series this past weekend at Comic-Con. The series follows Wynonna Earp, a descendant of Wyatt Earp, and features a relationship between Wynonna’s sister Waverly and Deputy Sheriff Nicole Haught. The third season is expected to air in 2018. In the meantime, be sure to catch the current season of Wynonna Earp Fridays at 10/9c on Syfythrough August 25th. In other renewel news, the TNT drama Animal Kingdom has been renewed for a third season. 

6) NBC recently announced the semi-finalists for the 12th Annual NBCUniversal Short Film Festival. Two out of the sixteen films that were named semi-finalists are LGBTQ-inclusive. The first is an episode of Brothers (dir. Sai Selvarajan), a web series in which “four transgender male friends explore life and love in Brooklyn”. The second film is Pop Rox (dir. Nate Trinrud), which features Jesse, an Iranian-American teenage girl, telling her best friend, Roxanne, that she’s in love with her. All sixteen semi-finalist short films will be showcased in public screenings in New York on August 15th and 16th. Find more information about the festival and the full list of semi-finalists here!

7) MTV released the list of nominations for the MTV Video Music Awards this Wednesday! This is the first year that the network eliminated gender designations in the nominee categories, replacing Best Female Video and Best Male Video with Artist of the Year. Among the nominees are out artists Miley Cyrus, Halsey, Lauren Jauregui as a member of Fifth Harmony, and Young M.A. Find the full list of nominees here, and be sure to catch the VMAs live on August 27th on MTV! 8) Pop duo SUPERFRUIT have released a video for their song VACATION off of their album Future Friends: Part One. The video for VACATION features Grassi and Hoyin enjoying their vacation in many unexpected places, but still having a blast with fun constumes and drinks. Future Friends is available for purchase and to stream, and you can watch the video below. 

9) Openly gay songwriter Eli Lieb released the official video for his song “Shangri La” on Wednesday! Lieb describes the single as his “most intimate yet”. Watch the music video below, and listen to "Shangri La" and the rest of Lieb’s discography on Spotify and other streaming platforms.

10) Sparkler Monthly Magazine is crowdfunding to support its fifth year. Sparkler Monthly is an independent digital fiction magazine that publishes women-oriented and LGBTQ friendly comics, illustrated prose, audio dramas, short stories, and other content on a monthly basis.
