The GLAAD Wrap: Trailers for 'Cured' and 'Coastal Elites,' new music from Troye Sivan, Orville Peck, Chika, and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The trailer had been released for Cured, a new documentary about the LGBTQ activists who fought to declassify homosexuality as a mental illness. The film will premiere at Outfest, and have a panel moderated by Steven Canals, who is currently working on a scripted series about the same topic. Watch the trailer below.

2) A date has been announced for Ryan Murphy’s Netflix adaptation of play The Boys in the Band, which follows a group of gay man gathered for a birthday party when tensions arise. The cast includes out actors Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Brian Hutchinson, Michael Benjamin Washington, Robin de Jesus, and Tuc Watkins. The film will premiere on Netflix on September 30.

3) The first trailer has been released for Unpregnant, a road trip comedy starring Haley Lu Richardson and out actress Barbie Ferreira. The film follow’s Veronica (Richardson) who goes on a road trip with her former best friend Bailey (Ferreira) to get an abortion. The film will premiere on HBO Max on September 10; watch the trailer below.

4) The Banks, a graphic novel from out bi writer Roxane Gay, is being adapted into a film. The graphic novel follows three generations of Black women who work together in Chicago on a heist. The film will comes from publisher TKO Studios and Macro. In more film news, Universal’s adaptation of Tony Award-winning Dear Evan Hansen has cast out actor Amandla Stenberg in the role of Alana, which will be expanded for the film, with an additional song being written for her. Out actor Nik Dodani has also been cast as the role of Jared in the adaptation.

5) Out actress and comedian Tig Notaro has been cast in upcoming film Army of the Dead. Notaro will be replacing comedian Chris D’Elia, who was recently accused of sexual assault. The film follows a group of mercenaries in Las Vegas after a zombie attack and will be undergoing reshoots to add Notaro into the film. Out singer Tove Lo has been cast in upcoming Scandinavian film The Emigrants, making her acting debut.

6) A trailer has been released for HBO’s Coastal Elites, shot remotely, featuring a group of people coping in their own ways with this pandemic. The cast includes out actors Sarah Paulson and Dan Levy. Watch the trailer below.  Out writer and Vida creator Tanya Saracho has signed a deal with Universal Content Productions to create both television projects and podcasts, with her focus being on telling stories from and queer and Latinx perspective.

7) Hulu’s Love, Victor, the spin-off of GLAAD Media Award-winning movie Love, Simon, has been renewed for a second season. The show follows Victor Salazar, who spend the first season adjusting to a new school and coming to terms with his sexuality, with the season ending on him finally coming out to his parents. Out bi comedian Lilly Singh will be the star of a new NBC sketch series Sketchy Times with Lilly Singh, in which she will play multiple characters in her sketches filmed in her own home.

8) Quibi has renewed Sasha Velour’s docuseries NightGowns for a second season. The show follows the performance put on by drag star Velour, and delves into the stories of each drag performer featured on the NightGowns show.  RuPaul’s Drag Race has been renewed for a thirteenth season, as well as a sixth season of All Stars and futher installations of Untucked. Peacock has picked up One of Us is Lying, a series based on the YA novel of the same name, which follows four students who are suspects of a murder of one of their classmates. One of the students, Cooper, is a closeted gay athlete. Peacock has also ordered a reboot of cult classic comedy Clueless. The reboot will focus on the character of Dionne, and is described as bisexual in the series longline.

9) Troye Sivan released his newest EP In A Dream today. Listen to the album here. Out singer Miley Cyrus released a new single last Friday, “Midnight Sky,” along with an accompanying music video. Listen to the song here and watch the video below.

10) Out country singer Orville Peck released his EP Show Pony last week. The six-track album is available to stream here. He also released a new video for his single “Legends Never Die” with country icon Shania Twain. Watch the music video below and listen to the song here.  Out rapper Chika has released a new single “My Power” featured in the movie Project Power, which is also Chika’s acting debut. 11) Out writer Mathew Rodriguez has announced his next project, Carlos Alejo has to Lose his Chicos, a graphic novel following a Puerto Rican teen in new journey who learns to love his body and his sexuality. It will be released in 2023.
