The GLAAD Wrap: Trailers for 'Circus of Books,' 'Hightown,' and 'Bit;' new music from Sam Smith & Demi Lovato, Keiynan Lonsdale, Indigo Girls, and more!

The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Netflix has released the trailer for Circus of Books, a documentary that follows Karen and Barry Mason, a straight couple who owned one of the biggest gay porn shops in Los Angeles. The film also features drag queen Alaska and other members of the gay community whose lives have been touched by the bookshop. The documentary gets into some powerful issues around free speech in America. It will be released on Netflix on April 22. Watch the trailer below.

2) The official trailer has been released for Bit, the vampire film starring Nicole Maines as Laurel, a teenage transgender girl who moves to LA and falls in with a gang of intersectional feminist vampires. The film, which was hugely popular on the LGBTQ film festival circuit in 2019, will be released digitally on April 24. Watch the trailer below. In more film news, Netflix has announced upcoming romantic comedy Girls & Boys is in the works, loosely based on the life of Queer Eye star Antoni Porowski. 

3) FOX has renewed dramas 9-1-1 and its spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star, for a fourth and second season respectively. Both shows contain LGBTQ characters, including 911 Lone Star’s Paul Strickland, a firefighter and trans man played by Brian Michael Smith. In more TV news, the trailer has been released for season two of Amazon’s Homecoming, starring out actress and singer Janelle Monáe. The trailer shows a glimpse of her character kissing another woman. The show will be released on May 22, watch the trailer below.  

4) Out actor Bowen Yang has joined Quibi series Trip from out comedian Joel Kim Booster. Yang will play Booster’s wise and witty friend, the Jane Bennett of this gay Fire Island Pride and Prejudice adaptation. A trailer has also been released for Hightown, the new Starz series that takes place in Provincetown. The show stars out actress Monica Raymund as Jackie Quinones, a lesbian Fishery Services Agent who discovers a body on the beach and is caught up in a web of crime. The show premieres May 17—check out the trailer below.

5) Amazon has procured the rights to turn mystery podcast The Left Right Game into a series. Out actress Tessa Thompson, who leads the voice cast, will also be working as a producer on the project. The show follows a journalist (Thompson) who follows a group of paranormal explorers who take her on a dangerous journey. In more TV news, the trailers for several of NBC Universal's new streaming service Peacock's originals have arrived. This includes the trailer for Saved by the Bell, which stars trans actress Josie Totah. 

6) VH1 has announced a new drag competition show, RuPaul’s Secret Celebrity Drag Race. The show will follow celebrities undergoing drag transformations at the hands of famous drag queens including Alyssa Edwards, Asia O’Hara, Bob the Drag Queen, Kim Chi, Monét X Change, Monique Heart, Nina West, Trinity the Tuck, Trixie Mattel and Vanessa Vanjie Mateo. The show will premiere on April 24.

7) 20th Century TV has announced an adaptation in development of out writer Michael Arceneaux’s memoir I Can’t Date Jesus: Love, Sex, Family, Race, and Other Reasons I’ve put my Faith in Beyoncé. The show has Lee Daniels and Jerrod Carmichael attached with Arceneaux producing as well, and is expected to hit the cable market for purchase. Netflix has signed a two-year deal with comic book publisher BOOM! Studios to adapt several of their properties into series for the streamer. BOOM! has released several prominent LGBTQ-inclusive comics and graphic novels including Lumberjanes, Goldie Vance, The Woods, The Backstagers, The Avant-Guards, Fence, and more.

8) Sam Smith and Demi Lovato released a new song and music video, "I'm Ready" on Friday. The video includes several other queer performers including Shea Diamond, Alok V Menon, Valentina, and Gigi Goode. Watch the video below. Out singer and actor Keiynan Lonsdale has released a new single, “Gay Street Fighter,” which is out everywhere. Click here to download and stream the song.

9) Out singer Kehlani released a new single and video for her song "Everybody Business" on Thursday. Download the song here and watch the video below. Queer artist Bright Light Bright Light released a music video—which pays homage to NYC nightlife—for his new single “This Was My House” from his upcoming album Fun City, which will be released in September. 10) Out singer and rapper Mykki Blanco released a new single “Patriarchy Ain’t the End of Me” earlier this month. Listen to the song here. The Indigo Girls released a new song this month, “When We Were Writers,” the first single of their long-awaited new album, "Look Long," due out in May. Download and stream the song here.

11) Lastly, a date has finally been announced for out comedian Hannah Gadsby’s newest comedy special Douglas. The Nanette follow-up will be released on Netflix on Tuesday, May 26.
