Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Psychological thriller The Ground Beneath My Feet follows the story of Lola, a driven career-focused woman, as she deals with a love affair with her boss Elise while caring for her schizophrenic older sister. After screenings at film festivals including Outfest and Frameline, the Austrian film by Marie Kreutzer will open in New York City on July 26^th and Los Angeles on August 2^nd. 2) GLAAD Media Awards honoree Laverne Cox has been cast in Millennium Media action-comedy Jolt. Out director Tanya Wexler is directing the picture, which is currently in production in London, and is set to shoot for eight weeks in the UK and Bulgaria. At long last, Tessa Thompson has been announced as Marvel’s first LGBTQ hero when she returns as Valkyrie in the fourth Thor movie, Thor: Love and Thunder. She was named King of New Asgard by Thor at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Thompson suggests that the character’s sexual orientation will be addressed in the film during the studio’s panel last weekend at San Diego Comic-Con. “First of all, as king, she needs to find her queen.,” Thompson told the crowd in Hall H. There was reportedly a scene cut that was cut for time from the third movie which would have confirmed Valkyrie's bi identity. Thor: Love and Thunder is scheduled for a November 5, 2021 release date.

3) Catherine Hardwicke, director of Thirteen and Twilight, has signed on to direct a lesbian Viking love story, Heathen, with Constantin Film. The project is an adaptation of a Vault Comics story of the same name. The story follows Viking warrior Aydis, who is outcast from her village for kissing another woman and declares her own war against Odin, the King of Asgard and father to Thor. There is not yet any casting news or release date announced.

3) The trailer for Steven Universe The Movie was released last weekend during San Diego Comic-Con; the film will premiere on Cartoon Network on September 2nd. Watch the trailer below. In other TV news, the upcoming streaming service HBO Max is developing a half-hour dramedy called Drama Queen, inspired by the life of out writer and TVLine co-founder Michael Ausiello. Hulu has renewed The Handmaid's Tale for a fourth season and announced that Marvel's Runaways will return for its third season on December 13. Starz has canceled Now Apocalypse, and Netflix has expanded the final season of Lucifer from 10 to 16 episodes. Authentic Entertainment is developing an unscripted investigative show, The Mystery of the 1957 Gay Wedding Photos, which looks at the photos from a same-sex wedding found in a neighborhood drugstore in Philadelphia in 1957.

4) The season three trailer for She-Ra and the Princess of Power, created by out cartoonist Noelle Stevenson, is here. The show returns on August 2. Watch the trailer below. On broadcast, out actor Charlie Barnett (Tales of The City, Russian Doll) joins Arrow for its eighth and final season as John Diggle Jr. The casting was also announced during Arrow’s panel at Comic-Con in San Diego this past weekend. The show will return on October 15 at 9/8c on The CW. Out artist Janelle Monáe is set to star in the second season of Amazon’s psychological thriller drama Homecoming, succeeding Julia Roberts. New casting announcements have also been made for The L Word: Generation Q. Trans actress Sophie Giannamore, bisexual actress Olivia Thirlby, and lesbian stand-up and actress Fortune Feimster will join the cast of the reboot series set to premiere later this year on Showtime.

5) In more TV news, the trailer for the third season of Westworld has been released. The show, which features the aforementioned Tessa Thompson and out actress Evan Rachel Wood, returns to HBO in 2020. You can watch the trailer below. The trailer for Why Women Kill, the new TV series by Marc Cherry, has also been released; check it out, here. The show will premiere on August 15^th on CBS All Access. Additionally, Doom Patrol was renewed for a second season. Both seasons of the show will be available on HBO Max, the new Warner Bros. streaming platform. Season two comes to DC Universe and HBO Max in the spring of 2020. HBO has also ordered a second season of Los Espookys, while TV Land renewed Younger for its seventh season. Finally, out bisexual Lilly Singh’s new late-night talk show, A Little Late, has a recently-announced premiere date of September 16th.

6) Queer singer Sam Smith recently released the music video for new single “How Do You Sleep?” The cast of the video is full of LGBTQ performers, including Julio Marcelino, Anthony Garza, Grant Gilmore, Robert Green, Steven Guero Charles, Zachary Venegas, Devin Walker, Jalen Preston, Mark Daftari, and Jamal Deandre. Watch the video below. In other music news, queer singer King Princess released a new single “Prophet” off her upcoming debut album. The album has no official release date yet. Yet another remix of Lil Nas X’s smash hit “Old Town Road” has been released, this time featuring RM of K-Pop group BTS. Listen to the remix here. Black transgender musician Mizz June released a new single, “Fu*k That,” which you can purchase here. You can also watch the video for her single “War Call” here. Catch Black transgender artist and activist Mila Jam’s video for her new single “Masquerade” here. Conan Gray has released a video for his new single, “Checkmate,” which features a love (and revenge) storyline with both a girl and boy. Watch the video here. Out pansexual artist Brooke Candy has released the video for “XXXTC” with Charli XCX and Maliibu Miitch, which you can watch here.

7) Out country singer Brandi Carlile calls out sexism in country culture in a new feminist anthem “Cowgirls.” Click here to listen to a live recording of the unreleased track. The singer also pioneered an all-female music group known as The Highwomen. The group released their debut single and video, “Redesigning Women,” last Friday, and have an album set for a September 6 release. The Highwomen, which also includes Maren Morris, Amanda Shires and Natalie Hemby, will make their official live debut July 26 at the Newport Folk Festival. Carlile talks about the inspiration for The Highwomen: “I noticed recently that country music is having this weird issue that’s kind of countercultural and strange with the times, that there’s just not that many female country singers…there’s just not enough of us. And so The Highwomen have come to try to open that door up,” she said. Listen to "Redesigning Women" below.

8) Out gay actor and singer Jonathan Groff is set to lead the Off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors. Previews for the upcoming production begin on September 17^th, with opening night scheduled for October 17^th. Tickets are on sale now through November 24^th. In Los Angeles, the Pasadena Playhouse has announced its own revival of the beloved musical, starring actress Mj Rodriguez, out actor George Salazar, and Amber Riley (Glee).

9) LaFemmeBear is a Black trans woman, musician, producer, singer/emcee/songwriter, and sound engineer. She is currently working on her next music video for her song “IF,” and is crowdfunding to cover production costs.
