Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) The live-action remake of the Disney classic film Beauty and the Beast hits screens nationwide on Friday. In the updated take, LeFou (Josh Gad) is a canonically gay character. Beauty and the Beast is expected to break box office records for a March release. Let Hollywood know you support LGBTQ-inclusive films with #TeamLeFou on Twitter.
2) New York based comedian Robin Cloud is releasing her debut short film, Out Again, the story of a woman who returns home after marrying her girlfriend and has to face her mother, who has Alzheimer`s disease and forgot her daughter is a lesbian. The film is a part of the Refinery29’s Shatterbox Anthology, and will be available for streaming starting March 19. Watch the trailer below.
3) Paramount TV and Anonymous Content have optioned the rights to develop Indian author Diksha Basu’s upcoming debut novel The Windfall as a TV series, and out bisexual director Shonali Bose (Margarita With A Straw) is attached to write and direct the potential pilot. Viacom has also recently rebranded Spike TV to the Paramount Network, which will host a slew on new shows, including the Heathers reboot, which will feature genderqueer and lesbian characters.
4) Ryan Murphy is developing his fourth series for FX, a new drama called Pose, about different cultural facets of New York City in 1986. Among other things, the show will delve into the prominent ball scene of the 80s. Speaking of new shows, Comedy Central has just ordered a pilot from out SNL head writer Chris Kelly. The untitled comedy pilot will tell the story of two siblings who have to deal with their 12-year-old brother becoming famous.
5) Jane Lynch has joined the cast of the NBC comedy pilot Relatively Happy, about siblings who navigate love, hurt, and work, after a big loss. In other television news, CBS All Access has given a second season to the The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight, and Netlix has also just announced a second season premiere date for the acclaimed Master of None. As well as the news that the show will return May 12th, Netflix also released a short trailer, which you can watch below.
6) Queer Los Angeles-based band MUNA has just released a video for "End of Desire," from their latest album About U. The music video features a girl taking her girlfriend home to visit her family, in a sweet narrative about identity and relationships. Watch the video below. In other music news, Frank Ocean dropped a new single this week called “Chanel," check out the new track on Spotify.
7) Finalists for the 29th annual Lambda Literary Awards were announced on Tuesday, honoring LGBTQ works in fiction, memoir, poetry, graphic novels, academic studies, and more. The nominees include Tig Notaro`s memoir I`m Just a Person, David France`s How to Survive a Plague: The Inside Story of How Citizens and Science Tamed AIDS, and many more. The 29th Annual Lambda Literary Awards ceremony will be held Monday, June 12, at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.
