Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) NBC just ordered a 10 episode season of Genius Junior, a new game show hosted by Neil Patrick Harris. The show will follow children as they are split up into twelve groups of three, and undergo rounds that test their skills in spelling, math, memory, and more. Speaking of Patrick Harris, Netlix's A Series of Unfortunate Events has also been renewed for a third season. This is an addition to the recently announced season two renewal.
2) TNT has released a new trailer for their upcoming dark comedy, Claws. Claws premieres Sunday, June 11, and follows Desna (Niecy Nash) who fulfills her dream of opening her own nail salon, but is struggling to escape her criminal past. The show's cast also includes Uncle Daddy (Dean Norris), a bisexual and deeply Catholic Dixie Mafia crime boss. You can watch the trailer below.
3) The TV Academy this week told non-binary actor Asia Kate Dillon (Taylor on Showtime's Billions) that they may submit in whichever category they want after Dillon penned a letter to the Academy regarding the gendered categories of the Emmy acting awards. In other television news, NBC is upping the order of the new Will and Grace episodes to 12, and wrestling drama Kingdom will be ending after its third season. The first trailer has also been released for Andy Cohen's new game show Love Connection on FOX. You can watch the trailer below.
4) Ricky Martin has signed on to season three of FX's American Crime Story. The season's focus will be on the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace, and Martin will be playing Versace's boyfriend, Antonio D'Amico. Season three will premiere in 2018. Additionally, That’s So Raven is coming back with a spin-off on Disney Channel titled Raven’s Home. Out actress Raven Symoné and Anneliese Van Der Pol will reprise their roles from the original series.
5) Trey Pearson, a Christian rock musician, has released a music video for his new song Silver Horizon. Pearson came out last year, and this is his first solo project. The music video shows two men sharing a kiss and celebrating love at a church, as the people join their celebration and cheer them on. With his video Pearson has said that he wanted, “to show that there are more and more open and affirming churches out there and that the world is changing.” Watch the music video below.
6) The BBC premiered out singer Beth Ditto’s new single "Fire." The song will be available on Spotify and iTunes Friday, April 7th. "Fire" is a single off of Ditto’s new album Fake Sugar, which will be available June 16th. This is her first solo project after fronting the group Gossip. Halsey has also dropped a new single and music video titled "Now or Never," which is off of her upcoming album hopeless fountain kingdom, scheduled to be released June 2nd.
7) Out actor and advocate George Takei is working with IDW to publish a graphic novel about the internment of Japanese-Americans. The novel will detail Takei’s own experiences living in internment. The graphic novel is scheduled to have a 2018 release date.
8) PRIDE is a new LGBTQ documentary that explores Pride in the UK. The documentary takes a look at Pride’s growing popularity in the mainstream, and what changes that is bringing about. It also takes a look at the current political culture and how that affects Pride. The film is currently crowdfunding on Indiegogo. For more information click here or visit their website.
