Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBT-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.
1) The first official trailer has dropped for the feature Electra Woman & Dyna Girl starring out YouTube star Hannah Hart and Grace Helbig. The film features a superhero duo who get the chance to make it big in Hollywood and defeat a supervillain. The film will be released digitally though Legendary Digital and will be available online on June 7th. Check out the trailer for the action comedy below.
2) The trailer has been released for Seeking McCartney, a Chinese film about a secret relationship between two men traveling through Tibet. This film is one of the first feature films centered around an LGBT couple that has been approved by the Chinese government censors. Says director Wang Chao, "This is a small step for the film department, and a big step for the members of the film industry."
3) Outfest, an organization committed to telling LGBT stories through film, has announced their "West Hollywood Series." In this monthly program, Outfest will screen a film and lead a discussion at the West Hollywood City Council Chambers. This Wednesday, April 6, they'll show the Australian documentary Gayby Baby, a film told from the perspective of children raised by same-sex couples. Tickets are available now.
4) The nominations have been announced for the Daytime Emmys, including a nomination for the documentary Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine for "Outstanding Special Class Special." Other LGBT nominations include The Bold and the Beautiful, EastSiders, My Grandmother's Ravioli, East Los High, FABLife, MTV's White People, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The Daytime Emmys will be held on May 1. The BAFTA Televison nominations were also announced this week. The nominations include London Spy, Louis Theroux: Transgender Kids, Coronation Street, Transparent, Cyril Nri for Cucumber, Ben Whishaw, Ian McKellen, Graham Norton, and Stephen Fry. The BAFTA awards will be held May 8th.
5) BBC America has announced an after show for its hit series Orphan Black entitled After the Black. It will premiere on April 14, directly following Orphan Black’s season four premiere. In other TV news, Miley Cyrus has been announced as new coach for the 11th season of The Voice. Tattiawna Jones, of Flashpoint, has been cast as the female lead in the untitled Ed Weeks/Hannah Mackay pilot. Jones will play Hilda, a “lesbian lothario” in the comedy pilot for ABC. Additonally, Cartoon Network has renewed its hit animated series Steven Universe for a fifth season.
6) Out singer Alex Newell has released the music video for his track “B.O.Y. (Basically Over You).” The video features Newell getting some playful revenge on his ex, played by out model/dancer Nyle DiMarco of America’s Next Top Model fame. Check out the video below, Newell is currently on tour with Adam Lambert.
8) The Lifetime series UnREAL has premiered the spinoff digital series The Faith Diaries following Faith, a contestant on theBachelor-esque series within the show who viewers found out was a closeted lesbian in the first season. She left the show to be with her girlfriend Amy and the spinoff follows them as the girls move from their home state of Mississippi to Los Angeles and how their lives change. All 10 episodes of The Faith Diaries are available now on Lifetime platforms including MyLifetime.com.
9) Victoria Montesi, historically the first lesbian protagonist in a Marvel comic, is back in comics after over 20 years. Known for the early '90s comic Darkhold: Pages From the Book of Sins, Victoria made history as the first headlining LGBT character in Marvel or DC books. She appears in last week’s Carnage #8 and will hopefully continue to appear in new issues as the story unfolds.
10) GaymerX, the LGBT-inclusive gaming convention, is back for their fourth year. The convention features new and classic video games, tabletop games, panels, and more. GaymerX is currently crowdfunding for this annual event, in hopes to include such amenities as food trucks and an arcade.
