The GLAAD Wrap: Colman Domingo, Jamie Clayton, Nico Santos cast in new films; music by Fletcher, Phoebe Bridgers, Oompa and more!

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) Netflix has released the first trailer, key art and single for Lin-Manuel Meranda’s tick, tick... BOOM! The film adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s pre-RENT autobiographical musical will premiere in theaters on November 12, 2021 and will hit streaming services a week later on November 19. The cast includes out In the Heights actor Robin de Jesús as gay character Michael, transgender POSE star MJ Rodriguez and queer Love, Simon star Alexandra Shipp. Listen to the film’s official soundtrack entitled 30/90 here and watch the trailer below!

2) Out Tony-Winner Matthew López will make his directorial debut with LGBTQ romance Red, White and Royal Blue. The Amazon Studios production is an adaptation of out author Casey McQuinston’s 2019 New York Times best-selling novel of the same name. The story follows a romance between the President’s son and the Prince of England, will be produced by out filmmaker Greg Berlanti and producing partner Sarah Schechter. Out singer and producer Linda Perry is attached to produce, compose and music supervise Meet the Pumps, an upcoming film following an all female punk band in LA. 

3) Netflix has released teaser images for their gay holiday romantic comedy Single All The Way, which premieres December 2, 2021. The film is directed by out producer Micheal Mayer and stars Peter (out actor Micheal Urie), who convinces his best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) to pretend to be his boyfriend to avoid his parents' judgement about his single status. When Peter’s mom sets him up on a blind date with her handsome trainer James (out actor Luke Macfarlane), the plan goes awry.

4) Out actor and director Colman Domingo will star in Rustin, a biopic centering influential civil rights and gay activist Bayard Rustin. The Netflix film will be produced by out Oscar-Winning producer Bruce Cohen and Tonia Davis, the head of Michelle and Barack Obama’s Higher Ground Productions. In more casting news, out Crazy Rich Asians actor Nico Santos has signed on to star in the Netflix romantic comedy, Happiness for Beginners. The film is based off of Katherine Center’s novel of the same name and follows the character Helen, who signs up for a wilderness survival course a year after her divorce in hopes of finding her true self.

5) Out actress Amanda Bearse has been added to the historic all-LGBTQ cast of out actor Billy Eichner’s upcoming romantic comedy Bros. The Married... with Children star will play the mother of Macfarlane’s character.  Jamie Clayton, an actress who is trans and known for roles on Sense8 and The L Word: Generation Q, has been cast in the Hulu and Spyglass  reboot of film Hellraiser, as the pinhead character. Out actors Brandon Flynn and Adam Faison will also be featured in the cast. 

6) HBO has announced an upcoming dark queer teen comedy co-writtern and produced by Emmy nominated The Other Two creators, out producer Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider. The half-hour Untitled project will be set in the year 2000, where a closeted gay teen dissociates and imagines himself as a famous straight actor.

7) Out singer Fletcher released her new single “girls girls girls” today, a queer pop anthem. Listen to the single here. Out singer Phoebe Bridgers has released her cover of Bo Burnham’s “That Funny Feeling.” Stream the track here! 8) Queer critically acclaimed rapper and spoken word poet Oompa released her third album UNBOTHERED. Listen to the album here! In other music news, queer musician and performance artist Bitch has announced her new album Bitchcraft, out February 4, 2022. The album single “Hello Meadow” was released this week— watch the music video below!

9) Out five-time Emmy-winning actress Jane Lynch will join the upcoming Broadway revival of Funny Girl. Lynch will play the role of Mrs. Rosie Brice, mother to Feldstein’s Fannie Brice. Funny Girl begins performances Saturday, March 26, 2022, at the August Wilson Theatre, with an official opening on Sunday, April 24, 2022. In more theater news, out actor Nik Dodani has joined the cast of Waitress and will play the role of Obie. Waitress is currently on a limited engagement now through January 9, 2022. 

10) Studio71 has partnered with TikTok’s first LGBTQ creator house to release Pride House LA, an inclusive podcast hosted by queer Pride House members Garrett Clayton, Mollee Gray, Jeka Jane and Kent Boyd.
