GLAAD calls on the OMB to immediately comment on the reported censorship of 2018 budget documents

Mick Mulvaney must be asked if he is the man behind the ban

GLAAD President: “The Office of Management and Budget owes this country full transparency about their alleged promotion of dangerous censorship that harkens back to the days that HIV and AIDS research and funding were restricted with deadly effects.”

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today called on the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), led by Mick Mulvaney, to immediately comment on the reports of multiple Health and Human Service (HHS) agencies being directed to censor up to seven words including “transgender” and “diversity” from all documents pertaining to their 2018 budgets. A source in the Washington Post has linked the censorship directive to the OMB, who has thus far refused to comment.

“The Office of Management and Budget owes this country full transparency about their alleged promotion of dangerous censorship that harkens back to the days that HIV and AIDS research and funding were restricted with deadly effects,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “We cannot and will not allow hateful ideology, bigotry, and personal bias determine the health can wellness of the transgender community – which has been serially targeted for erasure under the Trump Administration.”

Since the news broke about the Trump Administration’s prohibition of the nation’s top public health agency from using the words transgender, diversity, vulnerable, evidence-based, science-based and fetus, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention issued a statement calling the report and “mischaracterization” while refusing to provide any facts about the directive or information about what was missing in the initial reports. With multiple HHS agencies coming forward with similar lists of prohibited words, it is long past due for the OMB to speak out about the matter.

This would not be the first time that the OMB under Trump and Mulvanay targeted the LGBTQ community in budget proposals. This past May, Mick Mulvanay revealed the Trump Administrations Fiscal Year 2018 Budget of the U.S. Government which included proposed slashes to programs and departments critical to the LGBTQ community including Medicaid, Planned Parenthood, and multiple HIV and AIDS programs within the CDC.
