In an interview on The Huffington Post, former President Jimmy Carter stated his support for marriage equality. The interview focused on his forthcoming book, NIV Lessons from Life Bible: Personal Reflections with Jimmy Carter, in which President Carter offers his own insight on the difficult questions that the bible poses for many people of faith. President Carter was raised Baptist, and has taught Sunday school since he was 18 years old. He is also a 2002 recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Asked for his thoughts on welcoming gay people into the church, President Carter said, “I personally think it is very fine for gay people to be married in civil ceremonies…So if a local Baptist church wants to accept gay members on an equal basis, which my church does by the way, then that is fine.” President Carter joins former President Bill Clinton and fellow Nobel laureate Al Gore in supporting marriage equality.
