It seems like Laverne Cox has been everywhere this year. From educating viewers about transgender people on the Katie Couric Show, to accepting the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, Laverne has done it all. Or at least we thought she had!
TIME Magazine today released a new cover, "The Transgender Tipping Point," featuring Laverne. TIME calls transgender equality "America's Next Civil Rights Frontier." Laverne is quoted saying, 'We are in a place now where more and more trans people want to come forward and say, ‘This is who I am.’ And more trans people are willing to tell their stories. More of us are living visibly and pursuing our dreams visibly, so people can say, ‘Oh yeah, I know someone who is trans.’ When people have points of reference that are humanizing, that demystifies difference.” You can watch a video below:
The article also tells the story of other trans people, including a Google software-engineer, a former National Guardsman and a 17 year-old trans girl who made history as homecoming queen.
This isn't the first time Laverne has been linked to TIME Magazine. She was included as one of the nominees for the annual TIME 100. She didn't make the list, but we think this cover might be even better. And, it's Laverne's birthday today too, which makes this a great way to celebrate!
