Actor Christopher Plummer finally added an Oscar to his trophy shelf Sunday night, when he won the award for Best Supporting Actor at the 84th annual Academy Awards for his role as an elderly gay man in the film Beginners.
The film costars Ewan McGregor as a man whose father (Plummer) comes out of the closet following the loss of his wife, and displays a new zest for life even after receiving a cancer diagnosis. Beginners has also been nominated for Outstanding Wide Release among this year’s GLAAD Media Awards, which will be given out on stage in Los Angeles on April 21.
Plummer has been a working actor since the 1950s, and is probably best known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. He was also featured in such films as Waterloo, Malcolm X, 12 Monkeys, and The Thorn Birds alongside Richard Chamberlain. However, he’s also made a home for himself in the theater and made his Broadway debut in 1953, winning two Tony awards over the course of his career.
Other actors nominated for LGBT roles at this year’s Academy Awards included Glenn Close, Rooney Mara, and Janet McTeer. You can watch a clip of Plummer's Oscar-winning performance below.
