Carla Hale, fired Ohio Catholic school teacher, abandoned by her union

Carla Hale, the Ohio Catholic school physical education teacher who was fired after being outed, has said her teacher's union has decided not to support her efforts to get her job back. Carla filed the complaint with the Central Ohio Association of Catholic Educators, as well as with the city of Columbus, a few weeks ago. The city has a policy against firings based on sexual orientation. Bishop Watterson High School, however, says she was not fired because her partner is a woman but because theirs is a "quasi-spousal relationship." The city's Community Relations Commission could take at least four months to decide if Carla's complaint should be passed on to the district attorney.

Meanwhile, the much loved teacher is without the job she held for 19 years. Students, former and current, have rallied in support of the teacher who was loved by many. A senior at the school started a petition to get her reinstated and other supporters have started an advocacy group, #halestormOhio. The group has posted videos on YouTube. There is also a donation site to help Carla fight her firing.

In addition, a member of the board of Bishop Watterson High School has recommended that the school take steps to becoming a safe harbor for gay students. She has asked that school create a gay and lesbian support group, have books in library about being gay and Catholic, create a safe space in the school and hold retreats and masses for lesbian and gay students and their friends and families. A number of donors have also said they will not donate to the Bishops Annual Appeal, which funds the Diocese of Columbus' programs, until Carla is reinstated.

#halestormOhio is planning a rally in support of Carla Hale in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, May 18th. The rally will be held outside the Catholic Diocese of Columbus Catholic Center.Binary Data y9nnLKCh1YA
