At 22-years-old, Cara Delevingne, hailing from London, has already estbalished herself as a success in the modeling world, and is helping accelerate acceptance and visibility at the same time. This week she will make her starring-role debut in the film adaptation of John Green's Paper Towns as Margo Roth Spiegelman.
What also makes this an important week for Cara, though, is her unequivocal affirmation to the New York Times: "My sexuality is not a phase. I am who I am."
Throughout her interview in the Times' Movie section, Cara also discusses her excitement to finally pursue what she's often seen as her true passion: acting. "It felt crazy to turn down roles because I thought I’d do anything to be an actress, but I realized my dignity’s more important than that,” she said of offers that came along before Paper Towns.
In her rise to fame, Cara has candidly discussed her attraction to both men and women, as well as her support for marriage equality. Cara is in a relationship with music artist Annie Clark, better known by her stage name, St. Vincent. The two appeared together at the Paper Towns premiere on Tuesday and Cara affectionately said of their romance, "Love is inspiring."
That a young woman and high-rising star like Cara is speaking her truth and affirming her identity in the media, matters. Though Cara has not used the word "bisexual" to describe her identity, her words will resonate with many people who are attracted to more than one gender, such as the bisexual community.
