The award-winning documentary Bridegroom will be available on Netflix starting October 27, 2013. This heartbreaking film follows the love story between two gay men, Shane Bitney Crone and Tom Bridegroom, and the difficulties faced by Shane after Tom dies in a tragic accident. This movie highlights the hardships LGBT people face without the legal protections of marriage, and raises awareness of the importance of marriage equality for same-sex couples.
Following the death of Tom, Shane recorded a moving YouTube video that details the rejection he faced from Tom's family when they refused to recognize their relationship. Released on the one-year anniversary of Tom's death, May 6, 2012, the video has been viewed more than four million times. Its impact inspired Shane and TV producer Linda Bloodworth Thomason to create a Kickstarter campaign to turn the video into a full-length documentary. The campaign raised $384,375, exceeding its goal of $300,000. Bridegroom premiered earlier this year at the Tribeca Film Festival, and was introduced by former President Bill Clinton.
With over thirty seven million subscribers in forty countries, the release of this film on Netflix will bring Shane and Tom's story to an even wider audience. Be sure and check out the film when it premieres on October 27, 2013.
