71st Emmy Nominations: Billy Porter, Laverne Cox, Cherry Jones, Ben Whishaw, 'Pose,' 'Queer Eye,' 'Drag Race' and more!

Nominees for the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced live this morning from Los Angeles, and included nods for several of LGBTQ stars and characters, as well as inclusive TV series. Winners will be announced at the 71st Emmys live on FOX on Sunday, September 22.

“The Television Academy sent a powerful message today not only about LGBTQ representation, but diverse LGBTQ representation on television,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “Today’s nominees better showcase the diversity of LGBTQ people from the trans and LGBTQ people of color in FX’s groundbreaking drama ‘Pose,’ to the story of a gay man with a disability in Netflix’s ‘Special,’ to Hannah Gadsby's fresh take on gender, to acting nods for Laverne Cox, Billy Porter, Ben Whishaw, and more."

Out actor Billy Porter picked up a nomination in Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of fan favorite Pray Tell on FX's GLAAD Media Award-winning drama Pose. Porter becomes the first out actor be nominated in the Lead Actor in a Drama Series category after GLAAD wrote about the lack of nominations in the Lead and Supporting Actor categories last year.

“Billy Porter is a gifted actor whose historic nomination will inspire so many LGBTQ fans who cheer for him each week on ‘Pose.’ He is a force for change in the entertainment industry who consistently uses his voice to send game-changing messages of individuality and empowerment,” Ellis said.

Season one of Pose was nominated in the coveted Outstanding Drama Series category; as well as in Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, Outstanding Period Costumes, Outstanding Hairstyling for a Single-Camera Series, and Outstanding Makeup for a Single-Camera Series (Non-Prosthetic). In addition, the short Pose: Identity, Family, Community (Inside Look) picked up a nomination in Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series.

Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) is nominated in Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. Out actress Cherry Jones is also nominated in the category for The Handmaid's Tale. Out actress Fiona Shaw picked up two nominations; one in Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work on Killing Eve, and the other in Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Fleabag. Out actress Abbi Jacobson is nominated in Outstanding Actress in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series for "Hack Into Broad City," with the short which she executive produced also picking up a nomination in Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. The Netflix series Special, starring, written, and executive produced by out actor Ryan O'Connell, was also nominated in Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. O'Connell himself was also nominated in Outstanding Actor In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series for his work on the show. 

Out actor Ben Whishaw is nominated in Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for A Very English Scandal, his co-star Hugh Grant was nominated for his role as UK politician Jeremy Thorpe in Outstanding Lead Actor in A Limited Series or Movie. The series, from out writer Russel T. Davies, is based on a true story about Thorpe, and his former lover Norman Scott (played by Whishaw). The series follows the twists and turns and political intrigue that follows their breakup as Thorpe's career moved forward. Eventually Thorpe was tried for conspiracy to murder his former partner. Davies further was nominated in Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special.

hannah gadsby nanetteOut comedian and actor Kate McKinnon picked up a nod in Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on Saturday Night Live. Out comedians and series writers Sam Jay, Julio Torres, and Bowen Yang are among the SNL writing staff nominated in Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. Hannah Gadsby and Wanda Sykes are both nominated in Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special, and their respective specials Nanette and Wanda Sykes: Not Normal were both nominated in Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded). Leslye Headland, the out co-creator of Russian Doll, is nominated in Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

Jane Lynch is nominated in Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. RuPaul's Drag Race picked up a nod in Outstanding Competition Program, with Untucked scoring a nomination in Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. RuPaul was also nominated in Outstanding Host for a Reality Program or Competition Program. Across Drag Race, All Stars, Untucked, and two nonfiction shorts, the Drag Race franchise counts fourteen total nominations for the day. RuPaul joins fellow nominee Ellen DeGeneres in the Outstanding Host category for her series Ellen's Game of Games. Billy Eichner's Billy on the Street, Jonathan Van Ness's Gay of Thrones, and The Randy Rainbow Show were all nominated in Outstanding Short Form Variety Series.

Jodie Comer was nominated in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of the bisexual assassin Villanelle on Killing Eve; also nominated in the category is Viola Davis for her work as pansexual lawyer Annalise Keating on ABC's How to Get Away with Murder. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is nominated in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Fleabag, the most recent season has begun to explore her character being bisexual and possibly having a relationship with another woman. Kristin Scott Thomas who plays that character, Belinda, picked up a nomination in Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. Ron Cephas Jones is nominated for his portrayal of William on This Is Us.

GLAAD Media Award-winner Queer Eye is nominated in Outstanding Structured Reality Program, the series has six total nominations this year. FOX's live musical RENT picked up a nomination in Outstanding Variety Special (Live). LGBTQ-inclusive series including GLAAD Media Award nominee Schitt's Creek, Russian Doll, The Good Place, Fleabag and Veep all picked up nominations in Outstanding Comedy Series. In Outstanding Drama Series, GLAAD Media Award recipient This Is Us and Killing Eve join Pose. Ava DuVernay's When They See Us is nominated in Outstanding Limited Series, which included Isis King as a guest star playing Marci Wise, the sister of one of the Exonerated Five. FX's Fosse/Verdon, about the relationship and cast of characters surrounding Broadway legends Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, is also nominated in the category.
